The Safe Indy Security Initiative is coming up on 3 years of working with Jewish organizations in Indianapolis and
across the state of Indiana. Here is a snapshot of Safe Indy accomplishments in 2022.

  • 169 Community Touchpoints through security consultations, community meetings, and communitywide
    communications.

  • 35 facility walkthroughs and formal security assessments completed
  • 41 Nonprofit Security Grant Program consultations
  • 16 Nonprofit Security Grants awarded, totaling $1.6 million
  • 7 incident/suspicious activity reports
  • 1 incident responses

In 2022, the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis’ Safe Indy Security Initiative assisted 13 Indiana Jewish organizations in securing $1.591 million to make needed security improvements.

The grants are funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Non-Profit Security Grant Program (NSGP) and managed locally by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS). The Safe Indy Initiative has a strong relationship with IDHS and is thankful for their ongoing commitment to securing critical federal dollars in support of the nonprofit sector.

According to FEMA, this grant provides funding support for target hardening and other physical security enhancements and activities to nonprofit organizations that are at high risk of terrorist attacks. The intent is to integrate nonprofit preparedness activities with broader state and local preparedness efforts. It is also designed to promote coordination and collaboration in emergency preparedness activities among public and private community representatives, as well as state and local government agencies.
