Making Connections

A week before their arrival, Adi, our Shlicha, approached me about finding a way to introduce Roma to the young adults in our community. I contacted one of the YLD co-chairs, Jose, who helped gather some people for Roma to meet on two different occasions. On the Friday of his visit, he was able to experience the vibrant Broad Ripple nightlife in the company of various YLD members, and on Sunday, he joined some of us for dinner at Kona Grill in Carmel. Roma added a whole new dimension to the group dynamic. His perspective was refreshingly different, and we all learned a lot from what he had to offer to the conversation. Through questions, answers and laughter, we were able to exchange our cultures and enrich our knowledge of the lifestyles of young Jewish adults in other parts of the world. Hearing his tales of his Israeli Defensives Forces service, how university life differs in Israel from the U.S., what it’s like being a Russian immigrant in Israel … meeting Roma was an incredible learning opportunity that was both enjoyable and intriguing.

We also ensured that Roma got the full American experience by taking him to Steak 'n' Shake!
