Meet Our YLD Intern Katherine!

Where are you from? I was born in Vinnitsa, Ukraine and immigrated to the United States with my family in 1992. We’ve been living in Indianapolis ever since.

What is your educational background? I attended the International School of Indiana from pre-Kindergarten to grade 12, where I received my bilingual International Baccalaureate diploma. I’m now a Romance Languages (French and Spanish) and Communications double major at DePauw University, where I will be a senior this fall.

What groups and activities are you involved in at DePauw? I am a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, the executive board of DePauw Hillel, Big Brothers Big Sisters and a DJ at WGRE, the campus radio station.

What is your experience with the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis? JFGI was instrumental in aiding my family’s settlement and assimilation into the Indianapolis community. Upon our arrival to the United States, the Federation heartily welcomed us and provided us with the basic necessities to get on our feet and begin our new lives. Along with many other Russian immigrant families, we were extremely fortunate to have the Federation’s involvement in our move to the United States.

Additionally, I was a Samuel H. Kroot Intern in the summer of 2010, when I had the opportunity to work in the activities department of Hooverwood. I had an absolute blast with the residents and the staff and loved every second of it!

What roles and responsibilities will you have as the YLD intern this summer?  I will be working with the various YLD committees to organize several social, cultural and social action events that will be occurring this summer. My principal responsibility is to ensure that everything runs smoothly and that everyone has a great time!

What are you most looking forward to throughout this internship? I can’t wait to meet everyone and get to know all of the wonderful people in YLD who I have heard so much about!

Last question: What’s your favorite funny story about yourself? On my Birthright trip, I got stranded for half an hour in a bathroom stall with a broken lock at JFK airport, and Facilities Management had to come rescue me. This all happened forty-five minutes before our flight to Israel took off… It’s a great story, ask me about it sometime!
