Celebrating Popsie’s Pantry Volunteers for Critical Service

This October marks the 12th anniversary of JFS’ Popsie’s Pantry! Volunteers have always been integral to the pantry’s operations, however, the need for volunteers grew immensely in the last couple of years. Today, there are 20 incredible individuals who dedicate their time monthly to supporting Popsie’s Pantry in three primary areas.

On site volunteers help pack groceries for client distribution, put away groceries, sort donations, and organize the shelves.

“It is such a joy to be able to volunteer in Popsie’s Pantry alongside so many other wonderful members of our community. Not only is it extremely rewarding to do something tangible and hands-on to give back, but when I combine this effort with the donation of food items and financial contributions, it’s easy to see my efforts make a meaningful major contribution. During Covid in particular, it was so nice to be able to safely give my time and dollars to an organization that continued to run seamlessly despite pandemic setbacks. I always have felt safe volunteering with JFS staff and appreciate all of the lengths they go to not only keep me safe but to keep their doors open during this unpredictable time.”  - Mollie Tavel Kaback

“I assisted with food shopping a few times, so I learned about the vital role that the pantry plays in the community and the hard work and funds required to support it. During Covid, the operations were altered to provide a safe environment for both clients and volunteers so I could continue to give my time. This is a philanthropic cause that needs financial and product donations as much as people to organize the pantry, restock shelves and fill food requests. I’ve done it all. While I may not be attending a fancy donor event or serving in an elite leadership role, I know my time here is of value and directly helps others in the community.”  - Ilene Smith

“I’m so grateful to be able to serve our community with such an amazing organization. It’s truly fulfilling to not only be able to help, but to have found a home with such wonderful people at Popsie’s Pantry.”  - Staci Farahan

“I volunteer at Popsie’s Pantry for many reasons, here are just a few; as always, but especially with the increase in food insecurity, Popsie’s Pantry provides a wonderful service to the community and makes it easy to help. I love that it’s Jewish based and takes care of kosher clients but is also inclusive and does not discriminate- so it truly is a community pantry. Lastly, I enjoy the staff, so warm and friendly it’s a pleasure to volunteer there.”  - Dina

“Volunteering provides me with a sense of purpose. I find my purpose through volunteering and becoming part of something greater than myself. Helping others can give your life new meaning.” - Angie Melrose

On site volunteers are coordinated by Lori Schankerman, who has been a volunteer at Popsie’s Pantry since the very beginning!

“Volunteering gives me a chance to give back to the community that I have been a part of for 60 plus years. If I can make a difference in just one family’s life, it gives me purpose!” - Lori Schankerman

Grocery delivery volunteers pick up packages from JFS and deliver them directly to clients in their homes.

“I volunteer at Popsie’s Pantry because I know how critical, but also pleasurable, food can be.  Our deliveries help people eat well, manage their households, and hopefully help them celebrate good times and get comfort in tough times.” - Jennifer Berday

“We do this because there are many people with food insecurity, and it is a mitzvah to be able to help them. JFS does so much to help the community and we want to help ease their workload.” - Alan Atlas and Lori Katz

Donation pick up volunteers help JFS utilize partnership and food redirect opportunities with Second Helpings, Costco, and other food pantries in the area.

“Almost a year ago, JFS reached out to me with a volunteer opportunity to help expand the food resources for Popsie’s Pantry. Today, Popsie’s receives an additional 150-250 pounds of food, household, health, infant and elderly supplies, monthly [from Second Helpings]. I am honored to help Popsie’s Pantry. Monthly visits to Second Helpings remind me of what it means to be a responsible and compassionate member of a community.” - Michelle Korin

JFS is always looking for additional help to best support the food pantry program. How can you help?
